& REALIZATION

I find the competency area of Math, data & computing one of the more difficult areas for me. However, I have made sure to keep developing and learning within this area throughout my entire study. Basic courses like Applied Physics, Calculus and Modeling have given me a strong base within this area. To be able to apply this knowledge in the field of Design, I followed the courses Making Sense of Sensors and Marketing Research & Design Methods. Within these courses I analyzed data from marketing research and sensors quantitatively and qualitatively, enabling me to analyze small or larger amounts of data. During my FBP I was able to apply this knowledge when researching.

Within nearly every course or project, this competency area can be found. Every product or presentation made contributes to the realization of a product and often involves technology. Courses that helped me regarding the technology were Creative Electronics and Creative Programming. Within these courses, I was able to immediately apply new gained knowledge regarding electronics and programming within my projects. During Project 1, we made a canvas with LEDs and worked with an Arduino, this helped me develop this competency area early on in my study. Additionally, during Project 2 and my FBP, I practiced sewing a lot, helping me realize prototypes within the CEST squad.

Within the competency area of Creativity & Aesthetics I have grown immensely, regarding both creative thinking and the aesthetics of for example products and presentations. During my projects as well as my internship, I have gained skills within graphic design, while working in InDesign, Photoshop, Muse and Illustrator. To be able to express ideas in a quality presentation, I followed the course Exploratory Sketching. The course Aesthetics of Interaction taught me that aesthetics of a product go beyond the appearance of a product and go hand in hand with the user experience and the interaction the user has with a product.

During my projects I used several brainstorming techniques to stimulate creative thinking and generate ideas.

As I did lots of fashion and graphic design within all of my projects as well as in my spare time, I was able to create beautiful prototypes and posters for my FBP, which were well received by participants in my user study and visitors during demo day.

DESIGN

& RESEARCH PROCESSES

I have discovered my passion for the competency area of Business & Entrepreneurship during my study at Industrial Design. I believe this area is one of the most important ones, as you eventually want to be able to sell your products and designs to keep your business running or your boss satisfied. I find it incredibly interesting to discover the needs and problems of a user and develop a concept that takes these factors into consideration, creating value for these users.

I have done the USE learning line of New Product Development & Marketing to learn more about how to successfully bring products to the market and strategically position brands. During my internship within the marketing department of Hunkemöller I was able to apply this knowledge in a company, giving me an immense amount of hands-on experience within the field of Marketing & Branding.

In regards to the other side of this competency area, for example regarding patents, I took the courses Design Innovation Methods and Introduction to Business Design. These courses take on a more research based approach in building a business.  The course Design Management thought me about a different way of thinking within companies in which design is managed and where form, fit and function is combined to a more coordinated design across all touch points.

During all of my projects and specifically during my FBP, I have applied this knowledge by developing brands, customer journey maps, business models and creating value for the customer.

During my study at Industrial Design I have learned to combine subjective and objective information to shape my projects. I have learned how to do research, analyze data and interpret results to eventually find valuable insights for my projects. During the course Design <> Research, I was introduced to researching through design. I learned that research not only includes online research and papers, but can also be done by designing concepts and testing these among users. The course Introduction to Business design has taught me more about doing online research, reading papers, referencing and documenting everything well and combining objective and subjective information.

During my research project, I combined all knowledge on design and research process and applied this knowledge within my research. Within all other projects I have done, I have always done research both online and by means of user studies. The USE line I followed has contributed to my development within this area by teaching me how to do market research and transform the results into valuable market insights. I am now able to apply different design and research processes depending on the design challenge.

As I believe the user should be involved in every step of the design process, the competency area of User & Society is included in nearly every course and project I have done. I have also followed several courses that specifically helped me develop within this competency area. The course User Centered Design helped me shape my vision of including the user in every step of the process, as within this course, the user is central and I was taught that I am always designing for a user. The course Social Cultural Sensitivity taught me more about the Society part of the competency area, as this course taught me about the cultural and historical context of design. I was introduced to the role of ethics, sustainability, history and interculturality in relation to design.

USE base continued teaching me about ethics, what the role of an engineer is in our society and about the user, society and enterprise.

Within my FBP I applied all this knowledge by including the user in every step of my process, and always making sure I was sensitive and ethically responsible.
